US Government and Religion

While digging around, I have found an interesting little tidbit of information that may interest those of you who keep insisting that the US Government was founded on the christian religion.

"As the government of the United States is not, in any sense, founded on the Christian religion; as it has in itself no character of enmity against the laws, religion or tranquility of Musselmen [Muslims] ... it is declared ... that no pretext arising from religious opinion shall ever product an interruption of the harmony existing between the two countries. ... The United States is not a Christian nation any more than it is a Jewish or a Mohammedan nation."

This statement was found on the Treaty of Tripoli and signed, as fact, by President John Adams and approved (unanimously) by the United States Senate on January 4, 1797.

So the next time you want to say that United States was founded on the Christian religion, remember this statement, signed by one of our founding presidents! Who better to judge the constitution than those who helped write it?
